Did you know that when you purchase travel insurance, some of your coverage may be affected by family members not traveling with you?

Under the Trip Cancellation benefit, some policies provide coverage for the following events affecting family members:

  • A sickness, injury or death of a family member.
  • If a family member who is military personnel is called to emergency duty for a natural disaster or have their leave revoked or are reassigned.
  • Attending a family member’s childbirth as long as the pregnancy occurs after the effective date of coverage and can be verified by medical records

While many policies provide some coverage for events involving family members not traveling with you, you must also pay close attention to the exclusions section of the policy. Unless specifically stated, most exclusions apply to family members not traveling with you as well.

So Grandma’s fall last month may not have anything to do with your trip leaving next week, but when she suddenly takes a turn for the worse and you need to cancel, her pre-existing condition may have something to do with your claim being reimbursed.

The most important thing to remember is to read your specific description of coverage before and after purchasing and if you have any questions, just ask!
