Booking the right hotel can make all the difference. Whether you spend a lot or a little amount of time in the room, investing in a decent hotel is important. If you’re walking around all day you’ll be happy to have a comfortable, clean hotel to relax in at the end of the day. And if you’re have a relaxing day, you wouldn’t want to ruin it by coming back to hotel where you won’t get a good sleep. Here are our tips to finding the right hotel.

  • If you are a frequent traveler, it may be good idea to get a hotel credit card so you can use points, get upgrades, and sometimes get a small gift at check-in.
  • When you check in at the hotel, ask if there are any upgraded rooms available. You may be able to get an upgrade for a small fee, or even for free.
  • As long as your destination doesn’t have some event going on, like a convention, booking a last minute hotel can get you great prices since they want to fill the rooms.
  • If you are trying to stay at hostels, read reviews to learn about the cleanliness, safety, and more. Nowadays many hostels can be pretty similar a regular hotel, just without the front desk.
  • Look on a map to find out walking or driving distances to attractions. You may find a hotel in town for a cheap price but it may not be anywhere near the part of town you actually want to be in.
  • Decide if you want a room with a view. If you won’t be in the room much, it may not be worth it.
  • Come up with a list of amenities you want included, like a pool, free breakfast, or Wi-Fi.
  • Pick one travel booking website to start your research. Go through the list and write down several ones you’d consider. Then, move on to another similar website and see how the prices compare.
  • Work with a travel agent to ensure that your trip and accommodations are catered to you and exactly how you would like your trip to be!

  1. I like your thoughts about getting a hotel credit card if you’re a frequent traveler. I would imagine that for infrequent travelers online reviews would be one of the most helpful resources in choosing a quality hotel to stay at. If you’re a family traveling with kids, a family blog about travel might be a good resource to look into.

  2. I’ll keep in mind to Work with a travel agent to ensure that your trip and accommodations are catered to you. I remember when my dad planned our trip to Africa and we ended up have to sleep in a rental care for 2 days. I will be sure to talk to someone who deals with travel plans next time!

  3. My husband and I are planning a really fun road trip and want to make sure we find good hotels to stay in while we travel. You advised that when you check in at the hotel, ask if there are any available upgrades, as they might have some free ones available. I’ll be sure to do this, once we find quality hotels to stay in. Thanks for the tips.

  4. I agree that it could be in your favor to ask for an upgrade at your hotel upon your arrival. Although you may feel embarrassed, it never hurts to ask. Asking for an upgrade could give you the room that you desire without paying the cost and booking it in the first grade. If you upgrade doesn’t work out, you don’t spend that much time in your room anyways so it could not even make a difference to you as long as you have a place to put your stuff.

  5. It’s really nice to know that a last minute booking can help save you a lot of money. My kids are always wanting to go on vacation, but I’ve never agreed to anything last minute because I thought it would be too expensive. The next time I’m feeling spontaneous, I’ll definitely look into hotel deals now. It might be a lot of fun!

  8. It has never occurred to me to try and get a hotel credit card so you can get points, upgrades, and gifts. My husband and I love to travel and finding a hotel room that suits our needs is a really important part of what we do. I think that getting a credit card like you mentioned could really help us save some money in the long run so we’ll have to give it a try.

  9. Thank you so much for mentioning that it would be a great idea to look at a map so you can pick a hotel that is fairly close to some of the attractions you may want to see. My husband and I are going to be going away for our first anniversary and I have begun looking for the lodging we want to use. I will have to make sure I find one that is near some of the events we plan to go to.
