With hurricane season in full swing, we wanted to take a moment to recommend the following tips to protect your home and family and minimize costly damage from potentially dangerous storms and hurricanes.

Create a disaster plan and evacuation route.

Stay ahead of the game by putting a family disaster plan into place. Be sure that everyone knows a central meeting place and that everyone has a list of important phone numbers. If you do in fact have to evacuate the area, have your route picked out before you get the news. Whether you are traveling to a family member or friends home, or to a shelter, be sure to figure out the quickest way to get there and have your supplies packed and ready to go.

Stock up on necessary supplies.

It is recommended by FEMA to stock up enough supplies to last at least 3 days for each family member. The list including items such as food, water, clothing, medications, first aid kits, flashlights, important documents, maps, batteries, and gasoline.

Secure your home.

If a hurricane is expected to head your way, take action and protect your home as much as you possibly can. Secure all windows and doors by using storms shutters or boards. Make sure to keep them locked at all times so it is less likely that they fly open. Put away outdoor furniture and anything left loose outside such as planters and garbage cans.

Do not go outside.

If you decide to stay put and the eye of a storm passes over where you are, it will appear that the storm has come to an end. This short period of calmness is quickly over when the other side of the storm arrives bringing in extreme wind gusts. Be safe, and stay inside until officials have announced it is safe to do otherwise.

Once a storm watch has been named, be sure you take all precautionary measures to prepare in case the watch develops into a hurricane warning.
