As soon as you find out your bags are missing, go to the baggage claim desk. It’s usually located near the baggage carousels. Once you notify the staff about your situation, you’ll be asked to fill out a property irregularity report (PIR). Have information like your reservation number, description of your baggage, and address where you’ll be staying on hand. Make sure you file this report before you leave the airport. You’ll be given a filing number and a copy of the report which you can use to track your baggage afterward. The airport can track your bags through the “World Tracer” tool. It can check where your baggage is and where it was lost. While at the desk you can request an overnight kit. Standard ones normally contain basic essentials like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, a toothbrush, a razor and shaving cream. We recommend giving the airline up to 24 hours before you check the status of your bags. Checking every other hour may cause you a bit of frustration.

If you choose to purchase replacement clothes and personal effects to hold you over, a travel protection plan can be very beneficial. Keep your receipts as well as documentation of your baggage delay or loss from the claim desk. If your bags have been stolen, be sure to file a police report. You can use those documents to file a claim. For delays, your bags will have to be delayed a certain number of hours listed in your plan to be eligible for benefits.
